Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
So, I was looking at my car the other day and thought ... why the hell are the inside of my pillars the same colour as my car ceiling instead of the dash/seats (light greyish colour instead of dark grey/black)? They stick out and make the car look a little cheap. I decided I want to paint them matte black ... but I thought I'd post here first for opinions.
I know homieG is opposed to the spray, at least for tinting (and I totally agree with you there), but I came across a guide on evolutionm where a guy used dupli-color vinyl and fabric paint:
http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-how-tos-installations/207021-how-create-stealthy-interior-black.html
Also debated using a carbon fiber wrap/vinyl, but I thought it wouldn't look as good. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I don't have any good pics of my car where you can see it, I'll try to take one this week or you can see it at KC/Fairview.
Here's a pic of a black RA, you can clearly see how the inner pillars contrast to the rest of the car:

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
I'm concerned about that too ... after I posted that I realized there are airbags in them ... maybe a pack of sharpies might be the safest way to go. :S
I'll take a look at it today, see if its even plausable.

They put the airbags in the pillers? Are you sure? Most come down from the side curtain do they not?

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
air bags wont deploy unless there is an impact. u cant take those pieces off without deploying the airbags. i would just spray em if i were you. i've done this in my older cars. comes out decent.

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
Spray the pillars without removing them? Thats precision work I don't think I'm capable of!
On another note, while looking up info on a-pillar airbags on Lancers, I came across this on a website (dated Dec 29, 2009)

Wonder if Canadian Lancers are different?
On another note, while looking up info on a-pillar airbags on Lancers, I came across this on a website (dated Dec 29, 2009)
http://blog.airbagsolutions.com/:
Mitsubishi is recalling model year 2008-2009 Lancer and Lancer Evolution vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and District Of Columbia. In areas where heavy road salt is used in the winter, a long term exposure to a mixture of melted snow with salt thrown up by the other vehicles on the road may cause a water-salt mixture to adhere to the front impact sensors. This coating over time may cause corrosion or the sensor. In the event of a vehicle crash of the type that would deploy the airbags this type of short-circuit may cause a delay in the deployment of the airbags which could result in driver or passenger injury. Dealers will install new front airbag sensors that have improved corrosion resistance. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on November 27, 2009. Owners may contact Mitsubishi Customer Relations Department at 1-888-648-7820.

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
I have a 2010. I hope they fixed that before building them. I might give them a call to ask.
Also, found a guide on how to remove the a-pillars! There's a guy who makes pillars with gauge pods with airbags still functional. Looks easy enough.

>.< ... thought you said they can't be removed without deploying the airbags ... maybe it was a typo? Either way, it's all good! Thanks for the help guys! I'm gonna research some paints and spray them down when I get paid ... taking them off first of course!

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
there is a special paint you can buy for those pillars
make sure you get the right stuff or it will just peel off eventually

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
Will do. The guy who wrote up the guide on evo-m used this:
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/vinyl.html
It says it doesn't require use of a primer, but I imagine I probably should anyway.

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
hehe, Ron, I'm tempted to CF wrap them ... just worried about airbags
According to this video though, might be ok ...

Re: Painting my Pillars (Lancer)
the plastic pieces ALWAYS come off, and you wont deploy the bag.
one thing i HIGHLY suggest is adhesion promoter before you paint.
that way you wont need to scuff down the surface to get the paint to stick
its also a good idea to use an alcohol based cleaner to remove any silicone or oils from the surface to be painted.
ive painted LOTS of pillars and plastic trim pieces to know what i'm talking about.
if you're worried about the removal of the trim pieces, take it to a pro.
