E-Test Changes for 2013
Saw this on the torontomaxima forums, thought id post up here seeing as i know a lot of us are running CEL lights without thinking about them... and doing some other unmentionables regarding etests. Basically no more sniff test starting january. BUT any CEL codes will automatically fail you. and you cannot clear them and go because they scan the ECU to make sure the car is "ready", ie. its driven long enough since its last reset to have all codes back on. Also, pictures of VINS, plates and odometers are to be submitted with every test to reduce chances of fraud.
some stuff to read:
http://mechanicmississauga.com/2012/07/12/ontario-drive-clean-2013/
http://www.aa1car.com/library/ic10224.htm
http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/environment...STDPROD_080001
quote from one of the board members which pretty well sums the situation:
I've already had my 2002 maxima tested under this new system. Since my precats are completely gone, my car should have failed miserably...BUT, I took the time to reloate my two "sensor 2" o2's to the rear, and took care of my engine light. When I took the car for the test, He hooked it up, ran it, and I passed with flying colors. The test took about 7 minutes to complete.
This was super easy for me, as I never have an engine light on because I find it irritating...so it worked out for me. For those who don't mind the engine light, you will fail instantly. Resetting your ECU prior to taking the test will also result in failure because there won't be sufficient data in the ECU for their machines to read. You also cannot "fake" this e-test. When your car goes in, pictures of your vehicle are required (plates, VIN, and odometer).
Gone are the days when you can pass with an EVAP code, or a bad O2 sensor. Anything triggering that engine light will fail you. I anticipate that O2 sensor, and EVAP system parts will be selling like crazy once people realize how the new e-testing system works. There is no tail pipe sensor here, and no dyno rollers to drive on. It's a two-speed idle test that's all monitored through your OBD 2 port. With that said, their equipment can only read, and judge the cars running condition based on what the ECU reads. So if you can fool the ECU into thinking everything is good, then you'll pass.
On the one hand, it makes it a lot easier for some (like me), but for the rest who slide the engine light under the mat...you'll have to fix all the codes before you'll pass.

So I could in theory run catless DP's on the BMW with a CEL module and pass now? O_O.
Also Wth now for the autozam, it dosen't have OBD 2...Will the old sniffer still be available?

sounds like they do a visual inspection as well, so technically you could run gutted cats and o2 simulators and be good.
dunno about the non-OBDII... cause anything before 1995 didnt require OBDII..

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
I heard that if you take your car to the dealership and get them to re-flash your ECU, it will wipe out all existing history of bad codes and eliminate the CEL.. Obviously fixing what is causing the CEL before hand but if this is true and you drive the car for a bit before taking it for the E-Test.. Would it pass?

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
If you flash the ecu without fixing the underlying problem the CEL will return once all the ECU modules have fully reset (after driving for a bit). If you do fix the underlying problem the CEL will not return and you should pass without reflashing the ecu. If you just reflash and go for the test it will not pass as not all the modules will have returned to an active/clear code.
Thats the way I understand the procedure anyway.

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
yeah they can tell if the ecu is "ready" to be read. ie, if you clear and dont give it enough time to really reset itself. they'll tell you to come back later.

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
Any mechanics that are certified to do emissions testing want to teach us how this is going down when you are done training? I am super, super curious about everything with this new e-test procedure... What you can do to avoid failure, etc. It sounds somewhat simple reading but.. visual learner -points at self- Ze reading.. it works sometime.. but ze touching.. it work better. .

I THINK i heard that non-obd2 cars will still use the old sniffer test. Also, im not sure what areas this actually effects, cause i know (for example) that places north of barrie dont have any emissions testing, so they obviously dont care about this. Not sure which places this affects outside of the GTHA

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
did my e-test this past weekend just before leaving for the year end meet. RESULTS!
did both old and new test. you can request this up to Dec 31, and if you pass one of them you're good to go.
Passed the old sniff test with flying colours.
New test (interesting info):
I knew i had a P1456 Code, which is a Nissan specific code for very small evap leak (is emissions related). They found the code on their computer, BUT their computed didnt know what P1456 was as they didnt have the manufacturer specific codes (at least not all of them). So, they knew i had code P1456, but did not know what it was. Since they didnt know the code meaning, they passed me as they couldnt prove it was emissions related.
So im good for 2 years now

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
For the new test, do they do a visual inspection under the hood? I'm dieing to know if I can pass it with catless downpipes and an o2 simulator If I can thats great news otherwise I have to sitck with the super restrictive catted stock pipes :(

they didnt open my hood at all. didnt check under the car either (i was watching the whole time to make sure the guy didnt scrape my car, he came damn close a couple times). they just took a pic of my vin on the dash and my lisence plate for records sake.
and i wouldnt worry about that kiru . there are plenty other forums that talk about street racing too keep them busy. this is an innocent emissions thread

Re: E-Test Changes for 2013
CEL's pertaining to emissions - Tampering with A/F ratio, Compression, removing cats, crank-case breather thingy (visual?), I"m sure people can think of more =/
(i may be wrong about one of those above )
