19" or 20" won't make a difference. You need to carefully select the thickness (side-wall profile) of your tires to give you protection vs pot holes.

nothing to do with brand of tires. everything to do with how thick your tires are. Low profile tires will give you very little protection from potholes, since the edge of the wheel will be very close to the ground. thicker tires provides that good 'cushioning' between your rims and bumps on the road.

some additional things to consider when choosing the profile of your tires:

- low profile decreases sidewall flex, which improves handling during hard cornering (should, ceteris paribus, improve steering response)
- low profile INCREASES ride harshness
- since you are getting bigger sized rims for your car, you need to consider the amount of clearance you have between the wheel well and the wheel. If the profile on your tires is too high, the tires might rub against your fender.
