Juice's HID Retrofit Project
So, I thought I'd start a thread to show the progress of my retrofit project.
Picked up a set of used headlights through Kijiji for $120 (test fitted eyelids):
Picked these up during the free parts day at Standard Auto Wreckers:
Started prying out the projector housings:
I think I'd like to use these one:
It has a spiral lens (fresnel) which blurs the light at the edges, so I'll be trying to put in clear lenses for a sharper cutoff.
Fresnel
Clear (needs to be cleaned and polished)
Well ... that's it for now.
I'm going to test out my theory on colouring the projector lens without changing the light output next.

After I tackle these headlights, I'm going to try to replicate the RalliArt Concept headlights.

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
I was doing some looking around, and supposedly, having them coloured is illegal.. Well, shy of amber..
Red is out the back, amber out the front. Just thought I'd say something..
Clearing the headlights in Ontario is LEGAL. The problem arises when you alter the colour of the bulb itself. It must blink amber in colour in the front.
Section 62(13) H T A.

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
The colour of the bulb won't be affected by my shields.
Similar thing comes stock on Evo 9s I believe, the blueish hue.
ex:
Uncoloured Shield
Using cigarette packing for example:
Note: I'll be using red for my headlights instead of the blue.
As you can see, there's nothing blocking or modifying the light output.
You can also see the TTS forum on my left monitor!
and when viewed from a proper angle:
Nothing illegal about these bad boys!

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
I can't find the link, but I saw it somewhere..
Red usually is for tail lights, just hate to see all the hard work and the final result is a ticket..
Someone has to do it.. Beats walking into a cop shop and asking about it..

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
Wow! Kept seeing those things but thought they were fog lights. They look small but it says its still 8.1cm in diameter, which is just over 3" (which are the larger projectors!).
Hrmm ... if you pick these up, I'd like to check them out. I'm going to be using a non-bixenon projector as that was all I was able to find at Standard Auto Wreckers on free parts day.
For my next set, bi-xenon or bust!!

Ya, haha, last thing you want is to pop off your headlights, then suddenly have to go somewhere.

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
I'm not altering the colour output of the light at all. It will remain 100% whatever the colour of the bulb may be (5000k or 8000k). The bulbs will not be coloured. No paint or film or tint or whatever will be between the bulb and the lens.
If you all still think I shouldn't use red ... then I'll regress and go with another colour. Just want it to be known that there will be ZERO red light being emitted from the headlights.

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
i think the sides of the projectors them self may be red if i read that right.
As long as red light isn't there, you're fine. and go with 8000k! Sexy!!!!

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
If you look at my 2nd set of pics, I just placed a piece of blue foil from a pack of smokes between the shield and the lens ... the light from the bulb doesn't touch it at all ... I was gonna either paint that red or put something there that's red in colour ... the light won't touch it at all.
See this thread for example:
http://www.torontotunersyndicate.net/tts-install-tips-how-to-s-f8/coloured-projectors-t757.htm
Still though, if anyone thinks I'm gonna get a lot of heat for this, I'll go with a different colour. Red on Black just looks so sweet!

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
all im sayin is red is very very risky when on the front , if a cop sees any red at all he could fuck you ,
Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
i wouldnt do red , just cuz if the light catches it at all it will put out a lil bit of red , yea it will look sick but you dont need the extra attention
i seen a bmw with red ae's not to long ago , looked sick but sooner or later it will catch up to him

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
That's significantly different. AEs emit light.
I understand what you're saying though ... I'm going back to the drawing board.

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
just from your pic , with the blue foil it seems to look like the blue shows through the light , so red would do the exact same , doesent matter if its an actual red light or a white light with a bit of red in it , they can still fuck you for anything red on the front , i been hit with it before
Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
No bulbs used in that pic ... looks blue when you look in, but won't see it at all when a bulb is in and turned on. Blue looks pretty good ....

Re: Juice's HID Retrofit Project
Looks like I might need to buy new projector housings ... the ones I wanted to use were a little dirty and there was a bit of a burn mark or dirt build-up ... so I tried to clean it .... which resulted in some of the chrome comming off and leaving black spots.
the other projector housings I have are for 9006 bulbs so I'd rather not toss a xenon bulb in a halogen projector housing. :(
Anyone know how to resurface a projector housing? That chrome spray stuff apparently doesn't work very well and it's not worth bringing the housings to a shop to get professionally done for like $50+/each
